Carmel Driver Indicted For DWI Crash Injuring Brewster Family

 An area man who allegedly drove drunk and hospitalized three people when he struck them head-on has been indicted on charges that include multiple counts of vehicular assault.

Carmel resident Thomas Kiernan, 66, was arraigned in Putnam County Court on Tuesday, March 6 after crashing on Drewville Road on Dec. 23 last year with a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit.

First responders received a report shortly after 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 23 last year when Kiernan’s Ford Escape drifted into oncoming traffic, slamming head-on into a Nissan Rogue that contained a couple and their son.

Firefighters from Mahopac and Carmel had to extricate one man, who was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for treatment on a fractured skull. A woman and child were taken to Danbury Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Kiernan was arrested at the scene following a police investigation.

On Tuesday, a grand jury returned an indictment charging Kiernan with two counts of first-degree vehicular assault; two counts of second-degree vehicular assault, felonies. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent.

Following his arrest, Kiernan was released after posting $10,000 bond. No return court date has been announced.
